Tirupati: Input subsidies are better than incentives for farmers, opined Dr CL Venkata Rao, Executive Vice-Chairman of AP Swatchandra Mission. Speaking at the valedictory function of UGC sponsored national seminar on “Farmers Suicides in India: Causes, Consequences and Remedies”, organised by Department of Sociology, Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) here on Wednesday, he said the Lab to Land Programme (LLP) will help farmers in a big way.

He focused on the psychiatric research done on farmers suicides. Pseudo prestige like high expenditures during marriages and death ceremonies etc. should be avoided.Digging pits and using rain guns were the best innovations adopted by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he said and added multi factorial research involving psychologists, agriculture scientists, sociologists etc will help in controlling the farmers suicides.

SVU Rector Prof M Bhaskar explained the uses of science and technology and ISRO’s forecast on climate changes were helping in higher agricultural production. SVU EC member Prof P Balasiddamuni explained the use of statistics in agricultural management. Seminar Director Prof MP Narasimha Raju, Prof Stanley Jayakumar, Prof Ramana of SK University participated.
