Vijayawada: Proposals for upgradation of Vijayawada city into Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation by merging 45 villages has been pending for more than three years. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation unanimously passed a resolution in the council proposing to merge 45 villages to expand its territory up to Gannavaram, Nunna, Tadigadapa, Poranki and Gollapudi and Yanamalakuduru villages surrounding the city.
Due to geographical reasons, the city confined to restricted area from Krishna river in the south to Kandrika in the north and from Gollapudi in the west to Auto Nagar in the east. The city has no scope to expand towards south due to Krishna river. Consequently, the city is fast expanding towards North Inner Ring Road.
If the 45 villages, including rich panchayats like Gollapudi, Poranki, Kanuru, Nidamanuru, Gannavaram, Enikepadu, Yanamalakuduru, were merged, the city geographical area would be expanded leading to development of infrastructure as well as emergence of new colonies.
The city population would be increased from 12 lakh to 15 to 16 lakh with the upgradation of the civic body to Greater Vijayawada. Mayor Koneru Sridhar urged Karikala Valavan, the Principal Secretary, Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, on Wednesday when he visited the VMC main office to attend an official programme in this regard.
In turn, Karikala Valavan said the government is yet to take a decision in this connectio. Mayor said though three years passed since the council unanimously passed a resolution and sent proposals to the state government there is no response yet.
Senior corporator Chennupati Gandhi said many villages around Vijayawada would be developed with the formation of Greater Vijayawada. He said the civic body has no land to take up development works and not in a position to take up the important projects like housing under the PMAY.
He felt panchayats surrounding the city would be developed with their merger into Vijayawda city. He felt the State and Central governments would sanction funds for the development of Greater Vijayawada if the state government considers the proposal.
Earlier, the TDP leaders and now Minister for water Resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and Central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao used to criticise the Congress government for not up grading Vijayawada into Greater Vijayawada. Even after three years of TDP rule, there is no progress on the status of Vijayawada and its development. The city remained like a big town without adequate infrastructure.
