Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm that lasted for two hours has brought the temple city to its knees in the early hours of Friday. According to Meteorological department officials, lightning strikes were recorded at various places in the city. Roads and low-lying areas were inundated with rain lashing continuously from 4.30 am to 6.30 am.

The arrangements being made for the President’s visit were disrupted due to heavy downpour. The Transco officials stopped power supply to the pilgrim city due to rain and thunderstorm. Traffic flow disrupted at railway station, RTC central bus stand and other pilgrim centres. Rainwater stagnated at parking lot in the bus stand and TTD choultries. The parking place at TTD choultries looked like a water pond.

The students were forced to wade through rainwater to reach municipal high school at Dasari Matam. Rainwater and mud stagnated in drains on roads in which President convoy should pass through.

The staff of Tirupati Municipal Corporation (MCT) have alerted the higher officials and cleaned the drains. Rainwater entered the low-lying residential areas like Sivajyothi Nagar, Lakshmipuram, Sanjay Gandhi Colony, Postal Colony, Lenin Nagar, Narayanapuram and Timminaidu Palem. Vehicular movement disrupted with stagnation of rainwater in under railway bridges at DR Mahal and West Church.

TUDA Chairman G Narasimha Yadav has inspected the flood affected colonies at Lakshmipuram, Lenin Nagar and Narayanapuram. He instructed the corporation officials to take up relief operations and drain out rainwater in these colonies. MCT In-charge Commissioner Sridevi directed the officials to put in additional staff for taking up relief works. Newspaper and milk distribution boys had a tough time to distribute newspaper and milk to houses in residential colonies.
