Vijayawada: In a big achievement, the city police arrested two notorious dacoits of Uttar Pradesh in sensational Besant Road gold heist case on Saturday. With this, the police arrested nine dacoits in the case.

Addressing a press conference here, Joint Commissioner of Police Ramana Kumar and DCP Kanti Rana Tata disclosed that the two were identified as Ram Lakhan Singh alias Sagar Singh and Pankaj Singh alias Raju. The cops recovered from them two pistols and three rounds. The duo was hardcore criminals involved in thefts, dacoities, murders and cases were pending in other states, including Uttar Pradesh.

Disclosing details of the case, the police officers said that the dacoity was held in a jewellery-making unit at busy Rajagopala Reddy Street at Governorpet on July 11. After arresting seven dacoits within a fortnight, the police intensified searches for others in different districts of Uttar Pradesh. The city police in association with Ghazipur police conducted joint operation on August 25. Though the dacoits duo opened fire, the police were successful in capturing them.

Ram Lakhan Singh was dangerous criminal and had went to jail in cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery and dacoity. He attacked a man with cricket bat and caused head injury in 2013, murdered a man with pistol in 2015 elections and an accomplice in murder of a person in 2017. He was at large since then.

The Uttar Pradesh police had announced Rs 5,000 reward on his head. Whereas Pankaj Singh was involved in 17 cases of murder, dacoity, robbery and others. The CP, Sawang, had announced Rs 20,000 each reward for the informants who disclose whereabouts of the duo.

Immediately after committing crime in the city, the dacoits duo had left for Uttar Pradesh. The duo was experts in shooting. Out of the two pistols recovered, the one taken from Lakhan Singh was used for dacoity in the city.

Commissioner of Police D Gautam Sawang had formed CCS and Law & Order police teams to nab other culprits. The teams were sent to Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Tirupati, Puducherry, Bengaluru and other places. The teams have been searching for other accomplices in other states, the officials said.

The Commissioner of Police lauded CCS ACP VSN Verma, Inspector A Prasad Kumar, SIs Sridhar and Mohan Kumar and CCS staff for showing good performance in dealing with the criminals during the joint operation in Uttar Pradesh.
