The green cover is expected to usher in a positive climate change resulting in a change in demography of the district. When green cover is expanded to 9.50 lakh hectares it would usher in a 50 per cent greening of the district.

The geographical area of district is 19 lakh hectares, out of which the forest area is 1.96 lakh hectares, agriculture 8.92 lakh hectares, horticulture 72,031 hectares. Barren hills and hillocks constitute 1.65 lakh hectares and waste lands 50,000 hectares.

Speaking to The Hans India, District Forest Officer Chandra Sekhar said that a two-layer action plan is mooted by him to achieve the massive green cover target at the official and non-official level involving students and public. The ambitious programme is aimed not at just planting trees but also ensuring their survival. The programme would change the face of district and usher in a positive climate change.

In 2017-18 ongoing year, 15 lakh trees will be planted in the forest territory. About 1.06 crore plants would be raised in its nurseries for planting the same in a phased manner in the district. There are 272 Vana Samrakshana Samithis which will be roped into spread the green movement.

Last year 65 lakh trees were planted. The department ensured the survival of 95 per cent of trees planted. In non-forest areas 65 per cent of plants survived boosting the forest environment.

The Konda Pandugas launched by the forest personnel was aimed at boosting the green cover on hills and 600 hillocks. There are 283 forest nurseries which are engaged in raising of multiple species of saplings and supplying the same to stake holders in the district.

District Collector Veera Pandian is the moving force behind the formulation of action plan aimed at boosting forest cover by 50 per cent.
