Nellore: Ruling party leaders are now planning to intensify stir for achieving the much-awaited project, Dugarajapatnam Port which was delayed due to technical reasons for many years even though it has been assured for the state after bifurcation. Till now, only Congress leaders were demanding completion of the project, but freshly, ruling party leaders decided to mount pressure on the union government for necessary approvals.

Highlights:

  • TDP is planning to give no scope for opposition on the issue and considering an action plan to get the port sanctioned by the Union Government
  • The port was planned to be set up with an equity share of 74 pc from the Union Government and 26 pc share from the State
  • The first phase of the Project is estimated to cost around Rs 18,000 crore

The state is having Visakhapatnam Port Trust in Vizag and second one has been proposed at Dugarajapatnam in Nellore district which would be owned by the Union Government. But, the state government which has been focusing on supporting private ports had neglected to focus on the important port in the southern part of the state and there was much buzz about role of Krishnapatnam Port management, Navayuga Group, for alleged involvement in obstructing the development of the project.

After such hullaballoo statements by the opposition parties, the central government also failed to scout for another site in the state but failed to decide on it. The port was planned to set up with equity share of 74 pc from the Union Government and 26 pc share from the state with an initial cost of around Rs. 18,000 crore and it augmented to around Rs. 4,700 crore as part of the state’s share.

The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) estimated that a minimum of Rs. 6,000 crore is essential for the first phase when it conducted a survey and where share of the state would be Rs. 1,560 crore. Now, the cost would be further enhanced due to price escalation, according to analysts.

Now, not giving any scope for other parties such as Congress and YSR Congress on the issue keeping in view of the upcoming elections, ruling party leaders including ministers, legislators, and others decided to mount pressure on the union government for a speedy decision on the proposed second port.

They had decided to chalk out a plan of action for stepping up measures. If necessary, they would form a committee before end of this month for meeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. “It is necessary to take up the issue since the ruling party is having good reputation among public and it won hearts of people in Nandyal and Kakinada too. So, we would mount pressure on the union government on the issue,” said a senior leader from TDP.
