Vijayawada: Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said on Saturday that India is the largest producer of coconut in the world contributing 30 per cent of the world’s production.

Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy says there is ample scope to set up processing units to produce value added products

Somireddy on Saturday inaugurated the World Coconut Day programme organised by the Coconut Development Board and Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, at a private function hall at Ramavarappadu Ring Junction here.

Delivering the inaugural address, Chandramohan Reddy said India, Indonesia and Philippines produce nearly 75 per cent of the world’s coconut production.

He further said the world is celebrating the Coconut Day this year with the theme of ‘A Healthy Wealthy Life with Coconut.’
Giving details of the State, he said AP is traditionally a coconut growing area with a share of 4.96 per cent in area and 6.43 per cent in production in the country. Coconut is cultivated in an area of one lakh hectares in the State with an annual production of 1,431 million nuts, the Minister added.

Somireddy further said the coastal districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram account for 93.46 per cent of the total area and 93.76 per cent of production of coconuts in the State.

He said AP ranks third in the country in coconut production with a production of 5,482 nuts per acre. He informed that the State government is giving subsidy to the farmers to establish coconut-based startups to boost production, he added.

“There is a tremendous scope for establishment of processing units for value added products, extending area under coconut and also in promoting dwarf varieties due to the huge demand for tender nuts in the country,” he added.

He announced 60 acres land has been allotted in Samalkot of East Godavari district to set up regional centre for crop research institute in the State and added that the bulk of the coconuts produced in the State are being used for making ball copra and supplying mature nuts to northern states.

Coconut Development Board chairman Dr B N S Murthy, Horticulture Commissioner Chiranjiv Chowdhary, other officials and coconut farmers from across the country participated in the event.
