Madanapalle (Chittoor dist): Thieves struck at a SBI ATM in the outskirts of Madanapalle on Saturday. They reportedly used a gas cutter to open the ATM to steal the money. SBI, Madanapalle branch is having an ATM at Nakkaladinne on the Bangalore road in the outskirts of the town. Saturday and Sunday being holidays, the bank authorities had reportedly placed Rs.25 lakhs in the machine two days ago.

On Friday, they got a message that Rs.two lakhs were drawn from the bank. On Saturday morning they got another message that the ATM was under repair. As it was a holiday, they did not respond to that message. After some time, two persons who feed the cash into the ATM went there and found that the shutter was almost closed.

They noticed smoke coming out of the ATM. When they entered the ATM room they were shocked to see that the ATM was opened by gas cutter and its door had come out. The unidentified persons who broke it had run away with the money. They immediately informed the bank authorities and the police.

DSP Chowdeswari reached the spot and enquired with the bank officials. The bottom portion of the ATM was completely burnt. Police did not rule out the insider angle in the theft. As the ATM is at the outskirts, it was learnt that, bank authorities never keep such huge amount in it. Doubts were raised on the exact amount that was stolen by the thieves though bankers were saying that the thieves took away Rs.20 lakhs.

Police said that they will enquire from every angle. Dog squad will be deployed said the DSP. However, till late night on Saturday, it had not arrived. Based on the complaint of the bankers further investigations will be done, said DSP Chowdeswari.
