Srikakulam: With an aim to solve sanitation problem, the State government has proposed under-ground (UG) drainage system in all major panchayats across the state. As part of it, in Srikakulam, 10 major panchayats also get funds for UG drainage system. To prevent stagnation of rain and drain water on roads and as a precautionary measure to curb spreading of seasonal diseases due to poor sanitation experts suggested that UG drains are safe.

10 panchayats in the district will get Rs 34.56 crore under the proposal

As part of implementation of the recommendations, the State government sanctioned funds for UG drains.In Srikakulam segment Ampolu, in Narasannapeta segment Challavanipeta, in Amudalavalasa segment Ponduru, in Itchapuram segment Kaviti, Sitampeta in Palakonda segment, Mandasa in Palasa segment, Pathapatnam segment headquarter, Pogiri in Rajam segment, G Sigadam in Etcherla and Santhabommali in Tekkali segment would get UG drains.

In all the 10 major panchayats, the total length of UG drain is 136.70 km and estimated cost is Rs 34.56 crore. Out of total estimated cost, 70 per cent funds sanctioned from National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), 20 per cent funds from Panchayat Raj and Rural Development and remaining 10 per cent funds draw from concerned panchayats and 14th Finance Commission.

“Every year funds are being used for maintenance of open drains, sanitation for road repairs due to water stagnation and UG drains are permanent solution for all the problems,” said Panchay at Raj Superintendent Engineer A Mohana Murali. “We are going to allot 10 per cent of funds for UG drains,” District Panchayat Officer B Koteswara Rao explained.
