At last water had arrived from Tungabhadra (TB) dam to Kanekal tank in Bommanahal mandal. The Tungabhadra Board has released 500 cusecs of water out of the allocated 1,500 cusecs of water to meet the drinking water requirements of 600 villages which are dependent upon the water.

Kanekal(Anantapur): At last water had arrived from Tungabhadra (TB) dam to Kanekal tank in Bommanahal mandal. The Tungabhadra Board has released 500 cusecs of water out of the allocated 1,500 cusecs of water to meet the drinking water requirements of 600 villages which are dependent upon the water.

Highlights:

  • This release is part of the 1500 cusecs allocated to the district to meet the drinking water requirements of 600 villages
  • The TB authorities will release 100 cusecs every day for 10 days
  • In another two weeks, the entire quantum of 1,500 cusecs is expected to reach the storage points in Anantapur district

The water was released at a time when water levels in Chitravathi Balancing Reservoir reached rock bottom levels and a stage when they hardly could pump water to the municipalities of Kadiri and Dharmavaram. The water which reached Kanekal is being released to the MPR dam.

About 1.5 tmc ft water will be stored in the dam and will be released to South Canal and to PABR dam. The South Canal water will be pumped to Chitravathi dam and supplied to Sathya Sai drinking water schemes and to Rural Water Supply schemes.

About 600 villages are dependent upon the Chitravathi reservoir. Although, Tungabhadra Board released 500 cusecs, the actual quantum of water realised was only 350 cusecs as about 100 cusecs is lost due to evaporation losses and seepage losses. Another 50 cusecs have been subjected to water theft by Karnataka farmers enroute to 105 km High Level Canal. The TB authorities will be releasing 100 cusecs every day for 10 days.

In another two weeks, the entire quantum of 1,500 cusecs would reach the storage points in the district. A team of irrigation personnel including police are patrolling the HLC route to prevent water thefts twice a day.HLC Deputy Superintendent Engineer Sreenivasulu told The Hans India that the water to Chitravathi reservoir would reach by September 30 and by which time the 1,500 cusecs of water would also reach the district.

As of now there is no scope for the district to receive Handri Neeva water from Srisailam dam as Almatti dam has not reached an over flowing stage. There is presently no scope for supplying water for irrigation purpose as the existing water supply hardly caters to drinking water purpose. Due to absence of rains, sowing was done only in 25 per cent of the total sowing area.
