Amaravati: Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) invited bids requesting engineering consulting services for preparation of detail project report (DPR) for establishing a Light Metro Rail system in Vijayawada.

The AMRC is planning Light Metro covering two corridors for a total length of around 31 km. The organisation stated that the introduction of integrated, environment and climate-friendly Light Metro or Light Rail system was the object for the specific project.

It also said the DPR should mention the points validating the Mass Rapid Transport System options and conclusions of the pre-feasibility assessment and assessing the different design options of light metro for Vijayawada.

Australian urban transport expert Edward Dotson, in his report to government in July, suggested that Light Metro or Light Rail Transit was the most suitable transit system for Vijayawada city. He also suggested that the Eluru road corridor should be extended by another 5 km up to Gannavaram Airport.

AMRC also wanted consultants to include details on route alignments and assessment of land required for facilities such as station areas, electric substations, maintenance depot and constriction depots and other technical details.

The consultants should also include financial viability and expenditure of the project in the backdrop of Centre’s new metro rail policy. German development bank is the finance source for the project and Richard Ellert of Germany is tender agent.
