Avoid damage in the name of development
People should oppose the destruction of natural resources and environment in the name of development, appealed Human Rights Forum (HRF) general secretary VS Krishna. Speaking at HRF 7th district- level session here on Sunday, he expressed concern over government’s proposals to establish various industries like nuclear power, thermal power units at the cost of environment.

He opposed the government approach towards oustees of various projects like Vamsadhara and forcible eviction without paying proper compensation. These are the signs of destruction in the name of development and violation of human rights, he pointed out.
HRF vice-president KV Jagannadha Rao alleged that the present and earlier governments neglected Srikakulam district and also violating the rights of the underprivileged and marginal groups. Workers and farmers are being exploited by the governments in the name of development, he lamented.
The displaced under Vamsadhara project had lost everything, but the government had failed to pay reasonable compensation as per new Land Acquisition Act- 2103, he pointed out. HRF district president M Phalguna Raju, representatives of other organisations Kuna Ramam, K Rajagopal, Beena Dhilli Rao also spoke.
