Visakhapatnam: The State unit of BJP will have a tough time in bargaining for seats for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation after NDA dashed the hopes of Dr K Haribabu, who the party circles believed would get a berth in the ministry after M Venkaiah Naidu has been made vice president.

The TDP riding the crest of the victory which they achieved in Nandyal bye-elections and Kakinada Municipal Corporation, will not be cowed down by the BJP, which has been demanding a major share in the electoral posts since the alliance formed the government in 2014. BJP floor leader in the Assembly and Visakhapatnam North MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju on many occasions said that the party would ask for major share in the corporation elections including the mayor post.

His argument was that the people voted for the alliance keeping in mind Narendra Modi and even in civic elections, his influence would be more than any leader. However, with the latest development in the state politics, aftermath of the cabinet reshuffle, the BJP workers feel dejected.

``We many not ask for more than what we can win comfortably in the GVMC elections. After two victories in their lap, TDP has emerged stronger and may not offer a big share of the seats,’’ said a local leader. When contacted, Vishnu Kumar Raju said the Cabinet reshuffle will have little impact in the local politics.``It is also too early to think of seat sharing. We will assess our strength and accordingly we will ask for our quota of seats,’’ Vishnu Kumar Raju told this correspondent conforming that the elections were knocking on the doors.

BJP takes the credit of having its first mayor in south India when NSN Reddy was elected in 1981 corporation elections. His influence in the local politics was so strong that he got his wife Lakshmi and son Vivekanand also elected as corporators.
