Vijayawada: As part of its endeavour o spread the fruits of LED technology to the rural areas, the State government will finalise on Monday an action plan to install/retrofit around 40 lakh energy efficient street lights in village panchayats to reduce the burden of electricity bills.

AFD Bank (the French Development Agency) has agreed to provide financial assistance of around Rs 1,000 crore for implementation of the LED street lighting programme.

Highlights:

  • It is planned to install 40 lakh energy efficient LED bulbs in gram panchayats
  • It is estimated that through installation of these bulbs, 444 million units of energy can be saved in 10 years
  • It will drastically reduce the burden of electricity bills on panchayats
  • AFD Bank providing an assistance of Rs 1,000 cr for the Project

The government has estimated that it would secure a net financial benefit of Rs 669 crore and save energy up to 444 Million Units in the next 10 years in gram panchayats with the installation of LED bulbs.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday conducted tele-conference with the officials and reviewed the arrangements to be made for installation of LED bulbs in rural areas. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister suggested to the officials to study on scientific basis to know the actual energy savings in Municipal LED Street Lighting as it would be around 133 MU (Million Units) as expected now.

The officials informed the Chief Minister that initially LED bulbs will be installed in rural areas in the five districts of Anantapur, Dr YSR Kadapa district, Chittoor, East Godavari and Vizianagaram and 10 lakh bulbs will be arranged in the first phase.

District level committees and mandal level committees will be formed to conduct workshops pertaining to LED street lighting and separate accounts will be opened to depositing funds in this regard. Panchayats will pass resolutions for replacement of street lights with LED bulbs and will co-ordinate with the local distribution companies.

Panchayat Raj Minister Nara Lokesh, Energy Minister Kala Venkata Rao, Minister for Municipal administration and Urban Development P Narayana, Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar, Special Chief Secretary to Chief Minister Satish Chandra, Principal Secretary for Energy Ajay Jain, Commissioner of Panchayat Raj Department R Ramanjaneyulu and others took part in the tele-conference, said A Chandrasekhara Reddy, Media Advisor, Energy and CRDA, in a press release here on Sunday.
