Vijayawada: The New Government Hospital (NGGH) was flooded with patients for treatment as viral fever cases are rampant in the district due to change in climate. Unhygienic conditions in many parts of the district also adding more woes to the problem. On an average, more than 1,000 patients are suffering from various diseases and visiting the New Government General Hospital (NGGH) every day for nearly one month.

These patients come to the hospital for treatment in various departments like general medicine, ortho, neurology, pediatrics, and gastroenterology. But, in recent weeks, viral fevers topped the list of ailments due to change in weather conditions.

General medicine ward, which contains 150 beds is fully occupied by patients and some more beds are required to treat the patients suffering from viral fever. Due to lack of sufficient beds, the hospital authorities are shifting these viral fever patients to other wards and providing treatment and medicine.

The ICU is also occupied by the patients suffering from viral fever and other seasonal diseases. Cases of malaria, jaundice, typhoid and dengue also registered, said superintendent of the GGH Dr G Chakradhara Rao.

He said the hospital is fully equipped to treat the patients and sufficient funds are also available to purchase medicines and equipment if required. He said the hospital doctors and paramedical staff are trying their level best to treat the patients and recover from illness.

GGH is the biggest government hospital in the district with 1,020 beds. Nearly, 1,000 beds are occupied by patients suffering from various ailments in different wards. Unable to bear the expenses in the private hospitals, thousands of poor and middle class patients are depending on the GGH.

Deputy civil surgeon Dr J Narasimha Naik said the viral fevers will continue one month and suggested to the people to take precautions to get rid of from fevers by drinking boiled water, avoiding unhygienic outside food, keep the environs clean near their homes. He said diseases like dengue, malaria, brain fever can be checked by using mosquito nets and mosquito repellents.
