Rajamahendravaram: The ancient city and also cultural capital of the state Rajamahendravaram is craving for 'Heritage City' status since two years. In the year 2015, the process was stopped though the city had necessary parameters to get Heritage City tag.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu at a meeting held in the city in the year 2015, said the ancient city deserved the heritage status, after famous pilgrim centre Tirupati and Amaravati.

The union government had introduced a project three years ago - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) - , aimed to identify the ancient cities and protecting and propagating their heritage structures.

Under this project, up to 2018, the central government was to select the cities in co-ordination with respective state governments. Under HRIDAY, the selected cities will get funds for various development activities directly from the union government. The then collector H Arun Kumar finalised the proposals in this regard but kept it in cold storage.

Noted historian YS Narasimha Rao said that the city had a hoary past and richly deserved the heritage city tag. The city was in existence on the banks of river Godavari from 2nd BC. The city is a cultural hub and having many heritage structures which were constructed 150 to 200 years ago .

The epic Mahabharata was translated into Telugu language by Adikavi Nannaya Bhattaraka under the aegis of emperor Raja Raja Narendra and Rao said it is the duty of elected representatives to obtain Heritage City status for the city.

Dr PVB Sanjeeva Rao said several Royal dynasties such as Ikshawaku,Satavahanas,Vishnu Kundinulu, Chalakyulu, Cholulu, Kakateeyulu,Reddy Rajulu, Golkonda Nawabs,, Delhi Sultans and Tuglakh ruled the state from the great city as its capital.

“The city has many heritage structures such as central prison (Dutch fort), training college, district court, house of Kandukuri Veeresalingam Panthulu, government college, town hall, Chitrangi palace, Havelock rail bridge, apart from many ancient temples’ he added.

City BJP MLA Dr A Satyanarayana said a detailed project report was prepared to get heritage status to the city and the report will be submitted to the union government. Pressure has been mounted on central and state governments in this regard and the city will get the status, he added.
