Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh tops nation in deaths due to potholes with 131 casualties, as per the report released by the Union ministry of transport for the year 2016.

The report said while the use of mobile phones while driving claimed 83 lives last year, faulty speed-breakers, potholes and under-construction roads accounted for 350 deaths on the roads in the state making it to the top position in South India.

  • 131 died in the year 2016
  • Cell phone driving claimed 83 lives
  • 23 deaths and 68 road accidents every day in 2016

The latest data released by transport ministry said the number of road accidents slightly increased from 24,258 in 2015 to 24,888 in 2016. Andhra Pradesh recorded 23 deaths and 68 road accidents every day in 2016 and stood seventh place in number of persons killed in road accidents in 2016.

Road accidents have killed 8,541 people in AP in 2016, a 2.9 per cent jump from 2015 when 8,297 road fatalities were reported, indicating that AP roads continue to be one of the deadliest in the country.

The maximum deaths (131) due to the potholes on the roads were reported from AP in southern states, followed by Tamil Nadu with 130 deaths and Kerala with 54 deaths while Karnataka registered 37 deaths and Telangana registered only 3 deaths on this account. This was the first time that the road transport ministry collected such data from each state.

Similarly, the faulty speed breakers have claimed the lives of 201 persons in AP in 2016. A senior police officer said that the ill-designed speed-breakers have become a menace and more people are left injured for no fault of theirs in not only cities but also in semi-urban and rural areas in the state.

Though the government has suggested the local bodies to rebuilt the speed-breakers at some places as per Road Science Congress, the suggestions were put aside by the local bodies claiming paucity of funds.

“There are defects in the road engineering and suggested the government to rectify the problem immediately. An initiative has been taken and things would be set right shortly that would reduce the accidents,” said a senior police officer.
