Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will lay foundation stone for Muchumarri Lift Irrigation Scheme (MLIS) in Kurnool district on Friday as a part of Jalasiriki Harathi programme. The lift scheme has been taken up as part of Handri-Niva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) project.

The State government is giving priority to complete irrigation projects in drought-ridden Rayalaseema districts. The Muchumarri lift irrigation scheme (under HNSS Phase-I Package-II), is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd.

This scheme will irrigate 6.025 lakh acres of farmlands and provide drinking water to 33 lakh people in Kurnool, Kadapa, Chittoor, and Anantapur districts of Rayalseema. This lift irrigation scheme will carry 40 tmcft of backwaters from Srisailam reservoir.

In various stages, the water will be lifted to a height of 203 meters and will be carried through eight reservoirs. As a part of this scheme, pumps and motors with a total capacity of 3.7 MW capacity has been set up.

In 2017, Naidu has already inaugurated the first scheme near Muchumarri (KC Canal). Telangana government complained to Union government in last week of June on Muchumarri LI scheme along with other projects-Pattiseema, Purushothapatnam and Yeleru LI schemes. It argued that the projects were being executed without approval by either Krishna or Godavari River management boards.
