Kurnool: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu blamed Telangana for AP’s water woes. Launching a lift irrigation scheme at Muchumarri under Pagidyala mandal in Kurnool district, Naidu accused Telangana of resorting to diversion of the Godavari and the Krishna waters, depriving AP of its riparian rights. “Maharashtra and Karnataka are over-exploiting the river waters as of now. Telangana too joined the race, leaving Andhra Pradesh high and dry,” he added.
The lift scheme has been designed to lift the Srisailam backwaters in the Krishna river into the Handri-Neeva Srujala Sravanthi Scheme. In January, the Krishna water was released into the Krishna-Canal through the phase-I of the lift scheme at Muchumarri. The phase-II lift scheme is expected to irrigate 1.76 lakh acres through the HNSS project.
Addressing a meeting in this connection, the Chief Minister unfolded his dream to turn the backward and water-starved Rayalaseema into a hub of horticulture crops by harnessing the Krishna river. He called upon the farmers in Rayalaseema to demonstrate grit and resolve in overcoming the water hiccups by switching to drip irrigation.
Continued on P6Naidu said the linkage of the Penna and the Krishna rivers was on the top of his government’s agenda. If the linkage becomes a reality, the state could pre-empt the over-exploitation of the river waters by the hawkish states in upper reaches, he asserted.
