The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology of Indian Council for Agriculture Research, as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, organised a skill development programme on ‘Value Added Specialty Fish Products’ to members of city-based Small-Scale Fishers Producer Company Limited on the CIFT premises. The three-day programme concluded here on Friday.

The Small-Scale Fishers Producer Company is managed by fisherwomen from Mangammaripeta fishing village and they operate a mobile vending van ‘Fish Nutri Cart’, stationed on the Beach Road near YMCA and sell fishery products.
The fishers were trained on different value-added fish products namely fish burger, fish samosa, fish momo, fish cutlets, fish balls, fish cheese balls, fish fingers, grilled fish, butterfly shrimp and stretch shrimp.
The training was aimed at improving the hands-on skills for preparing variety fish products to increase consumer appeal. The training programme was organised to empower the budding women entrepreneurs of small scale fishers for enhancing livelihood opportunities through value addition and doubling their income. CIFT is committed to the development of fishers and fisheries.
Dr CN Ravishankar, Director ICAR-CIFT, Kochi, distributed certificates to the trainees and emphasised the importance of product quality and hygienic handling to protect consumer safety. Dr R Raghu Prakash, scientist-in-charge, CIFT, Vizag, Dr B Madhusudana Rao, principal scientist, Dr Jesmi Debbarma, technical and supporting staff of CIFT, were the resource persons for the training programme.
