Kurnool: The local onion farmers took to the streets and staged a dharna in front of the market yard here against the crash in the quintal rate from Rs 2,000 to Rs 300-600. They brought huge stocks in bags and spread out onion on the road to express their resentment. They parked lorries and tractors on the road. The agitators were supported by the leaders of the Rythu Sangham. The demonstration resulted in stalling of traffic for over one hour.
The RTC buses bound for Nandikotkur, Atmakur, Srisailam, Vijayawada, Nandyal, Kadapa were diverted via Maduranagar to Gutti petrol bunk. The farmers staged a walkout after not willing to sell their produce at the rate dictated by traders in the market.
They were agitated as no responsible officer was present at the spot. All the officers were on tour along with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The ryots did not relent even after being assured that remunerative price would be paid once the officers returned from the tour.
The police and the marketyard staff had a tough time trying to pacify the agitators. They were questioned by the farmers, who stated that they had invested thousands in raising the crop. The ryots expressed anguish over their fate if the rate was brought down. The agitators yielded following an assurance by the market yard staff that suitable steps would be taken after bringing their plight to the notice of officers upon their return.
