  • Every year 2,50,000 people end their lives in India
  • Suicide cases among youth aged between 15 to 29 are increasing, said Dr Vishal Indla, president of the India Psychiatric Society, Andhra Pradesh

The police department in Vijayawada and Andhra Pradesh is trying to create awareness among the students to check suicides. Interestingly, shortage of mental-health professionals is one of the biggest problem being faced by Andhra Pradesh. Only 400 psychiatrists are working in Andhra Pradesh for 13 districts which is insufficient to meet the increasing cases of psychic disorders, which is caused by a multitude of reasons.

Statistically speaking, the south Indian cities of Chennai and Bengaluru stood top among the big cities where suicides were very high in 2015. High school students to college goers and young professionals working in various fields including software, medicine and other courses and highly educated unemployed are committing suicides unable to bear the stress and facing other problems.

Every year 2.50 lakh people commit suicide in India against the eight lakh suicides committed around the World. Among the dead, more than 30 percent are in the age group of 15 to 29, according to Crime Records Bureau of India.

Students constitute the highest share of suicide cases in India. In 2015, the number of student suicides stood at 8,934. From 2011 to 2015, a total of 39,775 students killed themselves in India, said Dr Vishal. Number of cases related to attempt to commit suicide are much higher.

Unsuccessful stress management, failure in examinations, poverty, unable to adjust with life partners after marriage, unemployment, health problems are some of the most important reasons for the suicides.

If the parents and other family members notice the symptoms of suicides, they can take preventive measures and save the lives of victims, said Dr Vishal Indla, President Indian Psychiatric Society, Andhra Pradesh unit.
