Vijayawada: An attempt was made to cut journey time of those who trapped in traffic jams in the city when about 100 enthusiasts came under common shelter Vijayawada City Traffic Wardens Organisation recently.

About 30 of them completed their training with the city traffic police. Now, they are eligible to control traffic just like traffic constables. All these traffic wardens have been sharing their time for the good cause voluntarily.

The duty of traffic warden is to extend a helping hand to the traffic police by controlling the vehicle movement at problem points. To begin with, Commissioner of Police Gautam Sawang formally inaugurated the organisation on September 3 and took part in imparting training to some of them on September 7.

The Commissioner feels that it was just beginning and many would join the organisation voluntarily in the days to come. He was of the view that traffic wardens would change the pace of traffic movement by extending their helping hand. Though the traffic wardens have all set to change the vehicular movement, the city top cop is insisting on awareness on some aspects among the people.

“Among the challenges to the city traffic, road engineering, traffic control mechanism, awareness and other aspects are interlinked. How many of road users have awareness on traffic rules? How many of them are following the rules if they are aware of them,” he questions?

Though the concept of traffic warden is new to the capital city, the traffic officials are hopeful that their number would increase from hundreds to thousands to prove that the city has traffic discipline. Probably with this belief, the Commissioner of Police started employing wardens to guide citizens and create awareness on helmet and other aspects of traffic the other day at some busy junctions in the city.

“I am ready to spend two hours in a week,” said a senior citizen during the formal inauguration of the organisation.
There are many persons like him who wanted to share their time in the service of traffic regulation or the service of nation. “If the concept goes deep into the minds of people, they voluntarily come forward,” an official exudes confidence.

Efftronics Systems Private Limited, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Krishna District Lorry Owners Association and NGOs came forward to offer their services to the public through Vijayawada City Police Traffic Wardens Organisation. The wardens perform traffic duties and help traffic police during special occasions.
