The then Congress-led UPA government had included port in the AP Reorganisation Act, the MP said and flayed the state government for neglecting the port development.
Rao mentioned that the YSRCP has been requesting the Chief Minister for the last three years to announce the status of the project. “Chandrababu has been telling the people that his government is mounting pressure on the central government for implementing assured projects to the truncated state but still they are only on papers,” he ridiculed.
The MP alleged that the Chief Minister not taking development of the Dugarajapatnam Port as the management of Krishnapatnam Port exerting pressure on him. Varaprasad said trade is flourishing in Chennai without any technical and operational constraints despite having three ports.
He said there would not be any difficult with two ports close to each other as Dugarajapatnam will open job avenues for hundreds of families of Nellore and Chittoor districts.
The YSRCP leader stated that the proposed port will play a significant role in the region development as Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor passes through the Nellore. The port will have an additional advantage as railway line and national highway are close by, the MP said and informed that the Buckingham Canal could also be beneficial for improving trade.
Varaprasada Rao lamented that there is no progress in renovation of Buckingham Canal despite former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu made efforts in this regard during his tenure. He assured of mounting pressure on the BJP-led NDA government for taking up port and canal works.
YSRCP district convener K Govardhan Reddy made an appeal to the central government to develop Dugarajapatnam Port. He criticised Chandrababu for developing his own constituency and neglecting the other parts of the state. ZP Chairman B Raghavendra Reddy, party leaders M Muralidhar, N Padmanabha Reddy and others were present.
