Visakhapatnam: Over 16 lakh children below three years of age are awaiting Balamrutham, a food scheme which is intended to provide supplementary nutrition to the children aged between seven months and three years. The Balamrutham packets are to be distributed through Anganwadi centres, where about 16 lakh children will be benefited in the State.

The scheme being executed by the Department for Women, Child Welfare Department in Andhra Pradesh is aimed at providing 2.5 kg of ration comprising prepared roasted wheat, Bengal gram, milk powder, sugar and oil besides being fortified with vitamins and minerals.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Paritala Sunitha had said the scheme would be implemented from July 1 but till now there is no word about it

The scheme enjoys high coverage, but suffers from stock unavailability and intra-household sharing. The programme, like many others, suffered from bifurcation blues and was caught in a resource-sharing dispute between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Officials of the department concerned said those issues have now been addressed.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Paritala Sunitha had said the scheme would be implemented from July 1 but till now there is no word about it. Sources said 75 percent of stock is yet to reach the district centres yet the chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is determined to launch it early.
