Visakhapatnam: The busiest junction in the city, NAD Cross Roads will now have a unique rotary mode flyover, one of its kind in the country. There will be no traffic signals and all modes of transport can pass through in all four directions in three different layers as per the design.

In north-south direction, the flyover over the national highway 16 would start at few metres before the NAD Junction and ends at the airport. In fact, the national highway cuts through railway station and Simhachalam temple road.

Highlights:

  • There will be no traffic signals and all modes of transport can pass through in all four directions in three different layers as per the design
  • Rotary mode separator of the flyover at the ground level will have passage for light motor vehicles and the one above the ground level will be exclusively for the heavy vehicles

Tenders were invited for the flyover on July 7 this year and opened on August 21. Two city-based bidders Vijay Nirman Company and M Venkata Rao Infra participated in the bid and on Wednesday evening the tender was finalised favouring Vijay Nirman Company.

“Agreement will be signed between the builder Vijay Nirman Company and Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority in a day or two. Senior officials are in the capital giving final touches to the agreement,’’ a senior VUDA official told this correspondent here on Thursday.

He said in all probability, Chief Minister N Chandrbabau Naidu will lay the foundation for the flyover on September 27. Estimated to cost around Rs 122 crore, the work will start immediately and the project is expected to be completed in 24 months as per the international norms.

The rotary mode separator of the flyover at the ground level will have passage for light motor vehicles and the one above the ground level would be exclusively for the heavy vehicles. A provision is also made for the metro rail, the VUDA official said.
The junction will be free from traffic hassles, said ADCP traffic K Mahendra Patrudu. He said the peak hour traffic crosses 60,000 mark on week days.

The city has around nine lakh vehicles and more than half touches the NAD Junction. Every year, the city adds 50,000 new vehicles.

There are also proposals to construct another flyover from Madhurawada to NAD Junction connecting this Rotary Flyover. Other than NAD Junction, traffic touches peak at Hanumanthawaka, Maddilapalem, Satyam Junction and Dwarkanagar on the highway.
