Visakhapatnam: As per the directive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Visakhapatnam Port Trust will take up Swachchata Pakhwada from September 15 to October 2. During the programme, the VPT has proposed to take up various initiatives to the tune of Rs 1.70 crore.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman MT Krishna Babu said that VPT has received second cleanest port award from Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari during the Swachchta Pakhwada conducted from March 16 to 31. Drawing inspiration from award, in the second phase of Swachchata Pakhwada, many works were proposed.

The Chairman said that the port has handled 27.6 million tonnes of cargo in the present fiscal so far. Due to several constraints, there was no growth in cargo handling operations compared to previous fiscal. As part of commercial projects, the VPT would also explore the possibilities to take up some special projects in the VPT lands. During his recent visit, IT Minister N Lokesh also interested to develop buildings in the VPT lands. If all goes well, IT clusters and buildings would come up in the VPT lands, Krishna Babu said.
