AP will have 50 pc forest cover by 2029

Visakhapatnam: Principal secretary to the AP government on Science and Technology, environment and forest G AnanthaRamu said the forest cover in Andhra Pradesh will increase to 50 percent from the present 26 percent by 2029.

Co-chairing the first technical session on bio-diversity after the inaugural session of two-day regional conference on environment jointly organized by National Green Tribunal, AP and Telangana Pollution Control Boards, AnanthaRamu said Andhra Pradesh has been one of the bio-diversity- rich states in the country and has serious concern for coastal zone management, solid waste management, strengthening fisheries sector and protecting mangrove forest cover.

Speaking on environmental management system in ports, chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust MT Krishnababu informed that lot of mechanisation of the port has been taken up for improvement of environment with huge investments.

Mechanised Dust Suppression System, Sewage Treatment Plant , Water Sprinkling Towers and Green Belt Development were taken up for better environment in the city. He said 4.3 lakh saplings were planted in 650 acres during last three years.

Dr MK Ramesh, Professor of Law, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru spoke on “Environmental Justice – The judicial way”. He informed that the National Green Tribunal is a unique institution with special status, which combines with the functions of “Environmental Tribunal”, “Environmental Appellate Authority” and “Functions of Higher Judiciary”.

Dr VSRK Prasad, Chairman of State Environmental Appraisal Committee, AP and Director, Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam spoke on “Good environmental practices-Role of SEIAA and SEAC”.

Dr Prasad made an elaborate presentation on Environmental Impact Assessment and opined that EIA is not simply a report but is a process and a proactive planning tool providing a major meeting point between development decisions and environmental management. He emphasised that the EIA should have three core values-integrity, utility and sustainability.
