Tirupati: Their enthusiasm had no bounds! Not even the overnight precipitation, which had left SV University's Tarakarama Stadium slushy with mud. The venue reverberated with hoots and cackle of overjoyed youngsters and the same mood prevailed along the different routes of Tirupati Half Marathon, on Sunday morning.

The stadium witnessed a steady trickle of participants and their supporters, right from the early hours, and the serene atmosphere amidst a mild drizzle seemed not much of an obstacle for their keenness to participate in the marathon.

The second half marathon, a run for clean Tirupati, witnessed 5,500 runners in the three categories. First among the three events, 21K Run started at 5.30 am followed by 10K Run at 6 am and at 7 am the runners took off for 5K Swachh Bharat run. Interested participants took part from across the country.

In a bid to propagate for a clean Tirupati under Swachh Bharat initiative, the half marathon has aptly taken up the theme for a clean Tirupati. It was also aimed at bringing the people of world together to adapt a healthier lifestyle. NEB Sports Entertainment Pvt Ltd in association with DEEP (Disease Eradication through Education and Prevention) organised the event.

District Collector PS Pradyumna, Tirupati MP V Varaprasad, Urban SP Abhishek Mohanty, Sub Collector Nishanth Kumar, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ch Harikiran and TTD CVSO Ake Ravikrishna participated in the run. CVSO, Urban SP and Corporation Commissioner have completed 10K run.

MLA M Suguna, TUDA Chairman G Narasimha Yadav, R Sudha Rani, SVU VC Prof A Damodaram and others were also present on the occasion. Kiran, Vadde Navya, Shivananda Shetty, Bhagawati, Srinivasa Rao and Babitha Xavier stood first among different age groups and male and female categories of 21K run.

A participant in 21K run from Hyderabad Venkat Choudary said that he has completed the run in 2.20 hours. He praised that all the arrangements were exemplary. But, there was no proper encouragement, he opined. In some other places where he participated in such events, there used to be bands, school children standing on either side of roads waiving their hands etc which give the runners excellent motivation. That was not seen here, he observed.

A BCom Computers student Bukke Lavanya from Tirupati participated in 5K run, said “This is ‘Our Tirupati’. We should participate in it. Next year I will go for 10K run”. Another doctor from Tirupati Dr Narayana Reddy participated in 21K run, said he was not aware of the time and thought it will start at 6 am. Anyhow, he began the run at 6 am and completed in 2.11 hours.
