Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has proposed to take up registration of all apartment associations and resident welfare associations with the corporation for mutual benefit and for better delivery of services and for good governance.

It has been made mandatory, said Commissioner M Harinarayanan, in a release here on Saturday.
He said the corporation has been providing several services to the people and said citizen engagement was the most essential part of the goal of providing good governance by the GVMC.

Only when citizens are actively engaged the corporation can get the feedback from them on various issues involved in providing better services so that the issues can be resolved within reasonable time and delivery of services can be improved.

Citizen engagement is also necessary to create awareness among them on the new initiatives being taken up by the GVMC and to seek the cooperation of the citizens in implementing them effectively for the overall benefit of the public.
However, all citizens cannot be expected to get engaged in their individual capacity and hence the role of associations of citizens gains importance.

With increasing urbanisation, a large number of apartments and gateway communities are emerging in the city. One good way of engaging the citizens living in these apartments and gateway communities is through their associations. Every apartment generally has an association to take care of the maintenance aspects of the buildings.

But at present there is no organised or institutional mechanism of interface between the apartment associations and the GVMC. As a result, there are many gaps in providing good governance in many of the schemes being implemented by GVMC.

To bridge these gaps and to provide an institutional platform where the GVMC authorities and apartments associations can get engaged in a two way manner for mutual benefit, it is proposed to make it mandatory for all apartment associations to get registered with the Urban Community Development wing of GVMC, the Commissioner said.
