Thousands of residents living in the three km stretch from Eluru Road to railway track facing a challenging task of crossing three small bridges to reach Eluru Road during the morning and evening hours due to congestion.
To resolve the problems of these areas, the Roads and Buildings Department had started construction works of flyover bridge from Gunadala to Eluru Road at a cost of Rs 37 crore four years ago.
Unfortunately, the construction works stalled nearly two years ago due to the metro project proposals. Now, the Central government had cancelled the metro project for Vijayawada.
In the meantime, the project cost went up to Rs.56 crore in the last four years. Earlier, the contractor had started the works and laid some pillars and started the approach road works towards Gunadala railway track. Later, the works were stalled nearly two years ago due to the metro project proposals.
A senior Roads and Buildings department official said now the cost of construction reached Rs 55 crore and the department is waiting for the orders from the government to restart the works.
The state government is planning for light rail project for Eluru Road in view of the cancellation of the metro project by the Central government.
Still there is no clarity on the light rail project proposed by the state government. The official said restarting the Gunadala flyover bridge works near three bridges (Moodu Vantenalu) Junction will depend on the decision of the government.
The 1.20 km flyover bridge had been designed to connect the Gunadala to Eluru Road crossing over three canals and Vijayawada-Gudivada railway track. Due to frequent closure of railway gate due to passing of trains, hundreds of vehicles are stranded from 30 minutes to 60 minutes at least 10 times a day.
School and college going students, teachers, patients, traders and others are facing many hardships when vehicles are stranded in the traffic jam in the peak hours, said D Naveen Kumar, a resident of Adarsh Nagar. He said the plight of the people would end with the completion of the Gunadala flyover bridge pending works. He said the bridge will also connect the Eluru Road to Nunna, Agiripalli and other villages and many would be benefited with the completion of the bridge.
