As part of smart cities project initiative, Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APSPDCL) is gearing up to replace the existing electrical lines in pilgrim city with underground power cables. The central government has selected Tirupati along with Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in the state for laying underground electrical lines under the smart city project.

Tirupati: As part of smart cities project initiative, Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APSPDCL) is gearing up to replace the existing electrical lines in pilgrim city with underground power cables. The central government has selected Tirupati along with Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in the state for laying underground electrical lines under the smart city project.

The Centre will be releasing Rs 1,800 crore in different phases for various projects to be taken up in temple city. The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) officials handed over the work of laying underground cable network to the US based infra firm AECOM.

After Visakhapatnam, the Tirupati is the second city in the State to have underground power supply soon. The project will be taken up at a cost of Rs 360 crore jointly by Central and State governments, and MCT. The underground electrical lines will be laid in localities like RTC bus stand, main railway station, Ghandi Road, V V Mahal Road, KT Road, MCT office and other important commercial and pilgrim areas.

The power cables will be shifted to underground covering 220 km length through a special duct system. Later, the SPDCL will remove the earth’s surface electrical lines. While laying underground electrical lines, the SPDCL will construct indoor electrical sub-stations. Also, the existing electrical meters will be replaced with the smart prepaid power reading meters.
The main use of laying underground power cables is that people lives can be saved from electric shock, short-circuit and power mishaps during natural calamities.

The AECOM is preparing for laying underground electrical lines. In this connection, Municipal Corporation Commissioner C Hari Kiran said that the MCT has speeded up works as part of smart cities project. He declared that laying underground cables will be completed by the end of 2018. He stated that the AECOM has reputation of creating city infrastructure in the US. Hari Kiran said that civic body officials have discussed implementation of underground power cable project with the SPDCL officials.
