A challenge to the effective functioning of the police is coming when cops have been given duties other than their regular duties. The seriousness of the problem can be gauged by the very fact that field staff has been deputed to the other tasks. In a police station with 33 constables, 18 have been asked to attend for Dasara bandobast duty.
According an official statement, about 1,800 constables from Vijayawada City Police Commissionerate were assigned bandobust duty. They have to work at different places in the city for at least 10 days. Another 3,700 cops from other districts have also been taking part in bandobast duty.
“This kind of bandobast duties affected the proper functioning of police stations where the officials have to attend field work in cases of emergency as they face severe shortage of men. It was happened during previous Krishna Pushkaralu and annual events of Ganesh immersion, apart from other such events,” explains a senior cop.
“It is expected that about five lakh pilgrims visit the city during the nine-day festival commencing on Thursday. We have to work round-the-clock, forget about leaves and weekly off. We take a nap wherever there is a chance. It is by the blessings of the Goddess Durga we face all the challenges involved in the duties.
We have to take personal care of ourselves. We take a bath at available places and eat anywhere feasible. Those who are on bandobast duty needs to take care of their health and charge themselves before rejoining the regular duties,” reveals another cop.
Explaining how the bandobast duties hampered the regular performance of police stations, a cop said, “Cases will be accumulated. Mandatory attendance at courts also affects the progress of cases. The problem can be solved if armed forces are assigned with these kind of bandobast.”
