Visakhapatnam: All the trade unions of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant staged a dharna at main administrative building condemning the statement made by Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh, and secretary that “No further investment will be done by the Union government till reaching the expansion capacities within three years”.
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is the only shore based integrated steel plant in the country. So many people are generously given away their lands and villages were evacuated for steel plant and became DPs. Till date complete justice is not done for DPs, the leaders of the unions said.
It was pertinent to mention that the expansion of VSP was being taken up by raising funds on its own and no support was extended by the government. Moreover, permission was withdrawn for seamless pipes from the expansion project. Earlier, at the time of construction also the ‘I’ beam product also withdrawn.
No interest was shown by the previous and present Union governments in preferential allotment of captive iron and coal mines. The government was keen in making policies beneficial to private sector steel plants like Jindal, Essar and Bhushan and giving step motherly treatment to public sector steel plants.
The losses accrued by SAIL and RINL were only temporary. It was also to mention that the losses accrued are also due to defective government policies, the union leaders pointed out.
The leaders demanded that the government should take remedial measures and make effective policies in support to Public Sector Steel plants and take steps for preferential allotment of iron and coal mines. Till the government announces such favourable statement, the leaders said that they would continue the protests and exert pressure on the MPs and MLAs of Andhra Pradesh.
Leaders D Adinarayana (AITUC), Mantri Rajasekhar (INTUC), KM Srinivas (CITU) and other leaders from YSRTUC, TNTUC, HMS, BMS, USE, DITU, JMS, DSEU, AICTU, VSMS, ANVSEU, RSEU, VSPEU, DVRSEU and TNSWU were present.
