The Sarannavaratri or Dasara festival have been conducted on a grand scale for the last 127 years. It may be recalled that Dasara festivals in Proddatur town were famous in South India after Navaratri festivals organised in Mysore.

People of Proddatur, who have settled down in various professions not only in different parts of the country but also abroad came to their hometown to participate in the festival. The Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari Ammavari temple was constructed 127 years ago in Proddatur town.

According to historical sources, around 130 years ago, Goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari appeared in a dream to a trader belonging to Arya Vysya community in Penugonda of East Godavari district (birth place of ‘Vasavi’) and ordered him to construct a temple at Proddatur. Following her directions, the trader constructed the temple.

Since that day, the Arya Vysya Maha Sabha (AVMS) conducting the Navaratri Brahmostsavams on a grand scale. Addressing press conference in the town on Wednesday, AVMS president Boosetti Ramamohan said that they have been conducting the festival for the last 127 years without fail.

He said every day, the Goddess would be decked up in different Alankarams and Annadanam will be held for 9 days in the temple. He said the annual fete will begin from tomorrow and will conclude on September 30. He said that during the nine-day festival, artists from different parts of the country including the Telugu film industry would participate in various cultural programmes. AVMS secretary M Nageswara Rao, vice-president Jonnalagadda Ravindra and others were present.
