  • Elaborate arrangements are made for nine-day celebrations at Gangamma temple in Boyakonda
  • Devotees believe they can become disease-free by consuming Pushkarini water in front of the temple

The presiding deity will be adorned in several forms during the celebrations. The temple was prominent from the days of Moghuls when they ruled Punganur kingdom which was 14 kilometers away from Boyakonda. When Golkonda Nizams have declared war on Punganur kingdom and reached Boyakonda area. To protect the tribals there, an aged lady with a powerful sword in her hand started to hunt the Nizams troops mercilessly and saved them. Later, the tribals wished the old lady to stay back with them and thus she became Boyakonda Gangamma.

The Pushkarini in front of the temple was considered as most sacred. Devotees believe that, by consuming Pushkarini water they can become disease-free. Temple management is selling the ‘theertham’ (sacred water) from this pushkarini at Rs 10 per bottle. On Saturday, the goddess was decorated as Sakambari Devi and will get the form of Saraswati Devi on September 27. Similarly, Gangamma will bless the people in Annapurna alankaram on 29 and Raja Rajeswari alankaram on the last day.

The EO Ramanamma said that, special facilities were provided for the devotees visiting the temple during Dasara celebrations. Devotees who pay Rs 3,516 can participate in Unjal Seva, Abhishekam, Ganapathi and Chandi homams and they will be given goddess sesha vastram, sari with blouse, bangles, kumkum and prasadam.

To reach Boyakonda, devotees can take RTC or private buses or sharing autos which ply regularly from Chowdepalli or Punganur. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation also introduced recently a new service from Bengaluru to Boyakonda.
