Anantapur: Several people's organisations, NGOs and students led by Ex-Servicemen's Association took out a rally from the Arts College passing through main fares of the city in support of Jaggi Vasudev's nationwide campaign dubbed as 'Rally For Rivers' to focus on water conservation.

It was estimated that by 2030, present water resources of the world would cater to only 50 per cent of the world's population and 25 per cent of land would be converted into a desert. Participants in the rally culminated at Saptagiri Circle.

District Water Management Agency Project Director A Nagabhushanam, addressing the participants, called for measures for revival of rivers, undertaking of massive tree plantation and digging of farm ponds in a big way to conserve rainwater.

He said that in a district like Ananta pur, every drop of water need to be conserved. He said that the future presented a gloomy picture of water availability due to threat to rivers caused by chemical pollution and the drying of rivers. Unless the nations wake up to the grim reality of water shortage, only water troubles and tears will be the legacy for future generations, he warned.

The DWMA PO said that 1 lakh farm ponds campaign had been launched by his department involving farmers to conserve every drop of rainwater and for recharging of the groundwater. Captain Sekhanna, former president of Ex-Servicemen's Association welcomed the gathering. Hundreds of students and NGO activists participated in the rally.
