Visakhapatnam: Women having diabetes are no more sweethearts of their hubbies. Aping western culture, the local men are looking for slightest opportunity to get rid of their spouses, perhaps to get more money as dowry and another young woman on their bedside. These incidents are being reported in urban areas of the city notwithstanding that the Hindu dharma and assurance given at the time tying wedding knots.
B Dhanalakshmi, a resident of Vadlapudi, close to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, married one Santosh Kumar seven years ago. The couple spent a joyful life for about one and half years. Later, Dhanalakshmi conceived pregnancy. However, the pregnancy was terminated due to medical reasons. During the medical tests, doctors diagnosed it as diabetes and prescribed medicines.
After returning from the hospital, Santosh Kumar and his parents started harassing her stating she would never bear children as she was a diabetic. Even facing the harassment from in-laws and husband, Dhanalakshmi never informed her situation to her parents. Later, she conceived for second and third time which were also terminated for the same medical reasons.
With this, the in-laws and Santosh Kumar intensified their harassment demanding her to leave the house. Her in-laws told her that their son would marry again for begetting children. They also physically attacked her which resulted in fracture of her leg. Unable to bear the harassment, she returned her parents’ house and decided to fight for justice. She also lodged complaints with Gajuwaka, Duvvada and Woman Police station.
“What is my fault? Even the doctors are saying that diabetic sufferers could also get children, but they are not listening. After 7-years of marriage, they are demanding a divorce. In fact, I got good job offers also, but he never allowed me to join. Now I am 30-years, what can I do? My parents had given one house,
Rs 5 lakh cash and 30 Tula gold to him at the time of marriage. I have filed case in Duvvada police and the police registered 498/A case. Earlier, I filed a case in Gajuwaka police station when I was with in-laws house. The women police called them for counseling but in vain. I wish to lead my life with my husband. I will withdraw the cases, if he accepts me,” Dhanalakshmi told The Hans India, here on Monday.
“It is not correct that the diabetic patients never become pregnant. However, after conception, the woman must continue with the medicines as per the doctor’s prescription. Mostly insulin will be given to the diabetic pregnant woman instead of tablets to control the sugar levels. No need of worry and people should not believe that diabetic woman never gets children,” Dr KV Ramkumar, a noted Diabetologist clarified.
“We will not leave the issue till Dhanalakshmi gets justice. We will take up the issue and speaks to both parties. Our members will visit Dhanalakshmi’s in-law’s house along with women advocates and doctors to discuss and explain about medical treatment and further sequences to them,” Human Rights Council of India, Vizag City President and President SHE Association M Sree Devi.
