Vijayawada: With the career advance scheme being implemented by the Medical Education department, the number of PG medical seats may go up in the government medical colleges in the state.

Due to lack of qualified professors in the government medical colleges, the Medical Council of India had kept on hold the sanctioning of more PG medial seats. Taking this problem into consideration, the state government has introduced the career advancement scheme for assistant professors, associate professors and professors working in the government medical colleges.

An assistant professor who completes a five-year service will be given promotion as designated associate professor. Similarly, associate professors and professors will also get promotions. The Director of Medical Education sent a proposal to the government to this effect.

This file is pending with the Finance department. If the teaching staff are given time-bound promotions, the government has to increase their salaries. After getting a green signal from the Finance department, the government is expected to take a decision.

The Tamil Nadu government has already introduced this scheme. It may be mentioned here that professors, associate professors and assistant professors have recently met Medical and Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas and requested him for time-bound promotions for the teaching staff. He assured them that the government would examine their request.
According to sources in the Medical Education department, at present there are 800 PG medical seats in the eight government medical colleges.

The Guntur Medical College sent a proposal to the MCI to sanction forty PG medical seats. The MCI team will inspect the infrastructure at the college and recommend to the government for an increase. If promotions are given, other colleges would also fulfill the MCI norms for getting more seats. Director of Medical Education Dr K Babji said: “If assistant and associate professors are given time-bound promotions, we will fulfill all the requirements and get some more PG medical seats.”
