Visakhapatnam: Foreign languages department at Andhra University is teeming with students. Going by the demand in courses offered by Andhra University, it is evident that foreign languages remain a hot favourite among aspirants of all ages. As in a globalised economy, picking up a foreign language can be a game changer in professional career.

Highlights:

  • No of aspirants learning Germany 30, Spanish 35 and French 40
  • Language learners find evening classes feasible to attend
  • Students have more chances of getting recruited by MNCs
  • Courses become a hit among the students, elders, women and white-collar workers

Apparently, more and more students prefer international languages such as Spanish, German and French, which are being offered by the department as self-finance courses for duration of six months.

Speaking to The Hans India, Foreign Languages HoD Prof DVR Murthy said: “Learning a new language opens up new opportunities as well as gives advantage to climb the career ladder with ease. Every year the demand has been growing for these foreign language diploma courses.”

Even the department is offering a diploma course in Arabic, but it is only for defence, Eastern Naval Command and Air Force personnel. In this regard, Andhra University has inked an MoU with these institutions.

According to the Professor, there are several reasons for these courses becoming a hit among the students, elders, women and white-collar workers. Apart from the US, students and working professionals are also finding greener pastures in European countries like Germany and France.

Learning German and France is a need for those who want to pursue higher studies or to get an employment in any of these countries. Besides, there are more chances of getting recruited by MNCs if the engineering or management graduate speaks a foreign language, along with English, according to DVR Murthy.

Moreover, as these courses are being offered from Monday to Wednesday at 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm in a week, the language learning enthusiasts are finding it feasible to attend the classes.

It is learnt that the department had offered Japanese last year, but this time it was dropped due to faculty related issues.
Professor Murthy confirmed that they will add Japanese to the course list from next year onwards and he recalled that Japan Information and Study Centre had been set up by the Andhra University on the camps with the support of Mitsubishi Corporation recently.
