Addressing a national seminar at VJR Convention Hall on the outskirts of city here on Tuesday, Parthasarathi said that farmers of both Telugu states have an enormous opportunity to produce quality seeds by following best practices.

He said fertile land available in AP and Telangana is suitable for raising quality seeds. The officials of seed development centres need to educate the farmers about quality seeds.

If water resources are available then the farmers of Telangana and Rayalaseema can produce quality seeds, he said and stressed on completing pending irrigation projects immediately. The IAS official stated that several multinational companies are involved in the seed production industry. Now, the time has come to encourage small and medium industries for developing quality seeds, he added.

He said that seeds produced through organic manure has immense potential to export to other countries. He stated that the Telangana State had exported 17,000 quintals of seed to Sudan, Egypt and Philippines and ranks first in seed exports in the country. India is in fifth place in seed production and 34th place in seed export, he informed.

Parthasarathi said that meetings would be held in Odisha and Chhattisgarh states for creating awareness among farmers for producing quality seeds.

He further said that a seed quality testing centre is being establishing in Hyderabad with international standards. AP Seeds Managing Director M Balakrishna, Seed Certification Authority convener K Kesavulu, SSE Regional Manager Sudhakar, farmers and others have participated in the seminar.
