Boating is one of the important sources of income for Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) in Vijayawada. This income is in addition to the cottages run by the department at Berham Park and the Bhavani Island.
Since bifurcation of the state, the tourists flow increased to the Bhavani Island.
The visitors travel by boats or cruises from Punnami Ghat, Bhavani Ghat and Krishnaveni motel. The APTDC revenue on boating gradually increased to Rs 14 lakh to Rs15 lakh per month on an average from Rs 7 lakh before the division of the state.
According to a senior official supervising the boating activity, the APTDC owns nine boats and steamers. Bodhisiri is the biggest cruise with seating capacity of 120.
Three 60 seat capacity boats Krishnaveni, Amarapali and Bhavani are doing valuable service for a very long time. In addition to it, the APTDC is operating three speed boats, one Jetski and another boat with seating capacity of 25. Due to increasing tourists to Punnami ghat and Bhavani island,
these nine boats are not sufficient to meet the rush during the festival seasons and Karhika Maasam. Now, the Tourism Department had sanctioned Rs 1 crore to procure four more boats. Two boats with 60-seat capacity and two six-seater steamers will be purchased soon with Rs 1 crore.
Two big boats are imported from Mumbai and smaller steamers are imported from Vizag or Kakinada, said the official.
The APTDC will do small modifications to these new boats to meet the local needs. The APTDC officials are eagerly waiting for the release of funds to generate more revenue in Karthika Maasam begins next month.Thousands of tourists will visit Bhavani island for vacation during the Karthika Maasam.
