Kurnool: Tense situation prevailed for some time as leaders of BC community entered an argument with ST leaders in the presence of State SC, ST Commission chairman Karem Sivaji at State Guest House here on Thursday. Sivaji came to Kurnool on Thursday to seek opinion of stakeholders for inclusion of BCs in ST category. Several leaders from BCs and STs came to guest house to meet panel head.

The ST leaders under the banner of the Girijana Ikya Vedika Sangam have strongly opposed inclusion of BCs in ST category. At this juncture, BC leaders picked up an argument with ST leaders. Sivaji tried to pacify them but they did not listen to him. The police personnel intervened and dispersed the groups.

The Ikya Vedika leaders said that the socio-economic conditions of STs were not improved compared to BCs. They said that the STs are still backward in education and other sectors. The government will be doing great injustice by including BCs in ST category, lamented the Sangam leader. He made an appeal to the SC, ST panel chief not to entertain the idea of BCs inclusion in STs.

Otherwise, we will be forced to hold statewide protests, he warned. Countering the argument of ST leaders, the leaders of BC community brought to the notice of Karem that Valmikis in northern part of Andhra Pradesh are being identified as STs.
Speaking on the occasion, Sivaji said that the panel is conducting a survey as part of poll promise.

The entire survey report would be presented before the party high command, he stated. District Collector S Satyanarayana, Superintendent of Police (SP) Gopinath Jetti and other officials were present.
