  • Says NDA govt could not save lives of farmers who took extreme steps due to debt burden
  • Also states that GST was introduced in a hasty manner

Speaking at a Meet-the-Press programme organised by Andhra Pradesh Union for Working Journalists (APUWJ) here on Thursday, he said the experts have come forward to take part in the peoples’ movement against the polices of Union government across the country.

The CPM has taken the lead in protecting the interests of public and already countdown began for the BJP government, he said.

Yechury said the demonetisation put the country’s economy into a deep crisis. He pointed out that BJP government’s former Union Finance Minister Yashwanth Sinha had flayed the decision taken by the Modi government. He lambasted the Centre for failing to protect lakhs of farmers who had committed suicide. It has waived loans taken by industrialists worth Rs 2 lakh crore.

He pointed out the Union government did not take any step to recover Rs 10.5 lakh crore bad loans. He said surgical strikes initiated by the Modi government were diversionary tactics aimed at deviating attention of the people from the several pressing issues. He asked why even six months after the surgical strikes across the border, the attacks from the other side were continuing.

The senior Left party leader said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a fine event manager as he comes out with non-pragmatic plans and cited the example of the resent rural electrification programme. “The political climate in the country is changing and the youth, which was staunchly behind Modi, is fast realising its mistakes,” he said.

He said the GST needed revision as the rates were arbitrary. “GST is a big reform and there are too many layers of structures and it will take time for proper implementation, it was introduced hastily,” he pointed out.

Reacting on the State politics, he said the TDP government in the State has to face the wrath of public for supporting the Union government. The completion of capital construction and Polavaram Project is difficult, he opined.
