A local village custom, the Banni festival is where the villagers beat each other as a part of the Vijaya Dasami festival.
Despite the elaborate security arrangements, the participants from several villages clashed leading to a stampede on Devaragattu Hill. A 60-year-old man suffered a heart attack and collapsed. The injured were rushed to the hospital and six of the injured condition is said to be critical.
