Vijayawada: After many years of neglect, the biggest park in the city, Rajiv Gandhi Park got a facelift with greenery, lighting and restoring the damaged play toys The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has taken up initiative to remodel the park by increasing green cover and slashing big trees and thick bushes.

The biggest park in the city spread over 13 acres land became notorious for lovers and anti-social elements. Hundreds of lovers gather at the park every evening spoiling the pleasant atmosphere for children and elders.

Many parents in the city are not showing interest to visit the park due to the indecent behaviour of lovers in the park. Though children are showing keen interest to visit the park on weekends to play with toys and amidst greenery, the parents are not willing to visit the park.

Now, Commissioner J Nivas has taken initiative and asked the corporation staff to remove the thick bushes and big trees to discourage lovers from misusing the park for wrong doings. He instructed the staff to improve lighting, green cover and grow small trees less than three feet height.

The corporation employees have removed hundreds of bushes and big plants in two months. Commissioner Nivas told The Hans India that top priority is given for increasing lighting and growing short plants in the park. He said there should be no dark places in the park. He said rose garden has been developed to enhance the beauty in the middle of the park.

He said the civic body is also planning to repair the damaged play toys. Rajiv Gandhi Park may lose nearly six acres land for Krishna highway. The government is taking the land for the construction of the national highway. Due to unavoidable circumstances, the civic body is giving the land to the NHAI for construction of the highway.

The VMC is also developing K L Rao Park at Chitti Nagar area. The park has been in the state of neglect for nearly one decade. K L Rao park is the only park for nearly one lakh population in the Old City. Boating has been restored by repairing the water tank and greenery has been increased in the park. The corporation has spent Rs.14 lakh for the development of the K L Rao Park. Earlier, the civic body had developed Raghavaiah Park by increasing lighting and restoring water fountains.
