Visakhapatnam: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 700 crore underground cabling project at Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company's (APEPDCL) Pandurangapuram sub-station in Visakhapatnam on October 9.

The World Bank provides Rs 700 crore loan to the state government for the project which is aimed to revamp the existing overhead electricity distribution network to underground system in Vizag. According to sources, the underground cabling work would be taken up in four phases as part of Andhra Pradesh Disaster Recovery Project with the World Bank aid granted after Hudhud cyclone devastated the city’s infrastructure paralysing many operations and causing heavy loss to the government as well as the public.

It was decided to go for underground cabling in the areas nearer to sea coast in the city with an objective to reduce the vulnerability of the distribution network to natural disasters. It is learnt that the first phase of work under six substations at MVP Colony, Peda Waltair, KGH, RCD Hospital, Siripuram and Sivaji Park would be taken up at a cost of Rs 230 crore.
