GVMC to avail 500 rag-pickers’ services

Visakhapatnam: In a significant move, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) would utilise the services of 500 rag-pickers to collect waste from houses. GVMC Commissioner Harinarayan held a review meeting over rag-pickers’ welfare and rehabilitation at his chambers here on Friday.

He emphasised that the rag-pickers be made part of Swachhata programme for maintenance of cleanliness in better and efficient way. He also felt that with the cooperation of NGOs, there would be a good reach for Swachh Visakha programme in the city.

The 500 members would be divided into 250 teams for the door-door collection of waste, according to CM&OH A Hemanth. Urban Community Development project director D Srinivas said that they have already identified the 500 rag-pickers.
