Pithapuram: The Mission of Elimination of Rural Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) has kicked off an exercise to set up Women’s Health Clubs in urban areas, believing that prevention is better than cure by October-end for the benefit of women below the poverty line.

The MEPMAs are going to be formed in association with municipal and health officials and civil society organisations. The clubs will sensitise middle-class and lower middle-class women on health issues and ensure that they get appropriate treatment and monitor their health. Stage has been set for formation of WHCs in Pithapuram, Peddapuram, Tuni, Samalkot, Rajahmundry and Kakinada municipalities.

The clubs act as a bridge between the government medical institutions and the poor women and serve as a forum to extend health consultation. They also advise the poor, organise health camps for them and extend necessary support to them.

The clubs identify the health problems of poor women and strive to get them cured with the help of public medical institutions, organise health awareness camps in slums by medical experts, especially for expectant mothers on anaemia and nutritional requirements of mother and child and ensure that they receive nutritious food, counsel patients and ensure that the poor get quality and nutritious food through Anganwadi centers and the mid-day meals scheme.

The club will have municipal commissioner, health officer, CM Arogya kendram medical officer, Town mission coordinator, town federation chairman, five chairpersons of the Mahila Arogya Samiti, heads of civil society organisations, media representatives and Integrated Child Development Scheme representative as members.

The committee should meet at least once in a month and discuss about health issues at the slum-level. Every month at least one medical camp should be organised with the help of medical experts. Lactating mothers should be provided with medical kits on nutrition.

Municipal Commissioner Rammohan and City Mission Manager Venkata Lakshmi said that steps have been initiated to start the club in the town. Slums in the town have been identified for the purpose. A committee is being constituted with the relevant members. He said that the club would kick off its activities soon.
