State yet to tap National Water Development Agency potential
The State government, which is giving importance for river linkage programme is not availing the services of National Water Development Agency (NWDA) located in the city.
Rajamahendravaram: The State government, which is giving importance for river linkage programme is not availing the services of National Water Development Agency (NWDA) located in the city.
- The NWDA in the city is the only office in the state
- Its status is reduced to sub-divisional level in 2012
- If its status is upgraded to division, it will represent the State in meetings with the Central government
Water Resources Department (WRD) is also not aware of the Agency. NWDA provides necessary information relating to water balances in the rivers along with other data relating to river linkage programme.
The status of NWDA divisional office was reduced to sub-divisional level and it was shifted to Nasik in Maharashtra State. With the initiative of government, another new NWDA division was formed in Nasik as Maharashtra government was utilising its services fully relating to river linkage programme.
According to sources, NWDA is the only office in the entire state. The sub-divisional office can be upgraded to divisional office again to cater to the needs of State government.
If the State government puts its endeavour in this regard, the Central government will upgrade the sub-divisional office as divisional office.Maharashtra government is providing necessary buildings, staff and other facilities to NWDA to speed up its river linkage programmes.
NWDA division was started in the city in 1982 and in 2012 its status was reduced to sub-divisional office. The NWDA office helps to give required data to the State government relating to rivers. NWDA office in the city is working on modalities over the linkage of Mahanadi and Godavari rivers. However, the issue is in the jurisdiction of NWDA division at Bhuvaneswar.
